Patchwork baby blanket- A tutorial

Warning: I am seriously hesitant to even call this a tutorial. So, let's not. It is more like a random diagram that some of you might get use out of. I thought it was cute and wanted to share...

I needed to make a baby gift for a special little girl. I wanted it to be unique and special just like she is. Her nursery was done in shades of green and yellow because her gender was a surprise. I wanted to use those colors but also throw in some pink to celebrate her girly-ness! I decided I would try a patchwork design using fabrics I already had in my stash.

Let me go ahead and point this out: This is not a quilt! I have never made a quilt in my life. If you are looking for quilting advice, this is not the article for you. However, if you want to use some of the fabric from your scrap stash and come up with this cute design then please read on.

I came up with the measurements below based on what I wanted my finished size to be and cut my fabric. I pieced it all together using a 1/4" seam. Once the top piece was put together, I measured a piece of minky to match. I used this tutorial to applique baby's name on the minky side. Finally, I used this tutorial to put the minky and patchwork sides together.

Here is the layout for the patchwork. Measurements are below.

Patchwork square measurements:
-Orange squares- 4"x4"- need 6 of these
-Green squares- 6"x4"- need 10 of these
-Yellow square- 10.5"x10.5"- need 1 for center
-Dark Pink rectangle- 26.5"x3"- need 2 of these
-Light Pink rectangle-  22.5"x3"- need 2 of these

I also think this would be super cute using a bunch of mis-matched fabrics. Minky might be a fun alternative to the center piece and then an applique could be put on both sides. The possibilities are truly endless!

What was the final size of your "quilt"?

Love it! Very pretty with all those nice, bright colors. I've only sewn with minky once and it was a nightmare!! Maybe one day I'll get past the experience and try it again :)
